8 - Flight Day 8 (EVA5) :: Parting Shots
Grunsfeld and Massimino enjoy their last
moments walking in space. Carey and Linnehan
joke with the folks back at home. Hubble
anticipates its release.

8 - Flight Day 8 (EVA5) :: Installing NCS
Part 2 - the Radiator
The NCS radiator is about 10 feet tall and
flat and adheres to the outside of Hubble
on the Aft shroud. You can see the spacewakers
pull it out of Columbia's bay and install
it on Hubble's side. Afterwards Grunsfeld
and Massimino connected the wiring with
the NCC and Nicmos. Images

8 - Flight Day 8 (EVA5) :: Installing NCS
Part 1 - the Cryo-Cooler
The crew's mission today is to revive the
Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer
(NICMOS) of the Hubble Space Telescope.
The instrument has been inactive since 1999,
when its coolant was exhausted.
Astronauts John Grunsfeld and Rick Linnehan
will install the NICMOS Cooling System (NCS)
which consists of two main components -
the NICMOS Cryogenic Cooler (NCC) and the
NCS radiator. Here the NCC is fitted inside
of Hubble on the port side of its axial
bay. Images roughly
in chronological order.
